Historic Willamette's Calendar Had a Gap Every October. This Year It Got Filled.

October 1, 2026

For as long as Historic Willamette Main Street has run a formal events calendar, the stretch after Labor Day has been the quiet part. The Wednesdays in Willamette summer market wraps in early September. The wine walk follows a week or two later. Then the six-block business district along Willamette Falls Drive goes dark until Halloween.

This year that gap has an event in it for the first time. Historic Willamette Main Street's own calendar lists it as the First Annual WillametteFest, set for October 4. A one-word label, "first," is doing more work than most event names ever have to.

What the Calendar Used to Skip

The math is straightforward once you line the dates up. The 2026 Wednesdays in Willamette summer street market ran May 13 through September 9, every Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. The Willamette Autumn Wine Walk followed on Saturday, September 12, a $45-ticket stroll through the business district with two tastings per stop, live music, and a raffle benefiting the nonprofit that runs the district's programming. After that, the next fixed date on the books was Halloween in Willamette, October 31, from 3 to 6 p.m.

Three weeks in early September. Then nothing scheduled until the last day of October. That was the pattern, and it held for long enough that nobody had reason to expect it would change. A First Annual event, by definition, is the first time an organization has tried something. Historic Willamette Main Street tried it this year, and it landed in the exact window that used to sit empty.

First Annual WillametteFest, October 4

The event is produced by Historic Willamette Main Street, the same 501(c)6 nonprofit behind the wine walks, the summer market, and the Old Time Fair Parade that ran July 11 along Willamette Falls Drive between 11th and 14th. WillametteFest starts at 3 p.m. on October 4, according to the organization's own event listing.

A festival added mid-corridor makes more sense once you know what the corridor is built to hold. The Willamette Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009, and its period of architectural significance runs from 1895 to 1929. Thirty-eight properties within the district carry an official historic designation, and any exterior change to one of them goes through a city design review process before it happens. That kind of oversight tends to keep a commercial strip at a walkable scale rather than letting it sprawl, which is part of why a few blocks of Willamette Falls Drive can absorb a wine walk, a parade, and now a festival without needing to close half the town to do it.

The Fall Lineup

Oct 31 Halloween in Willamette 3-6 p.m., business district trick-or-treating

The Weeknights Don't Wait for an Event

None of this depends on the district only working on a festival day. Lark Café has been open on Willamette Falls Drive since August 2017, a project from Pascal Chureau and Ian Ragsdale, who also own Allium Bistro and Field & Vine Events. The café built its coffee program by training with Coava Coffee Roasters in Portland, and nine years later it is still the answer to a laptop-and-a-pastry kind of morning rather than a new arrival still finding its footing.

A few doors down, Willamette Garage Pub + Food Carts runs eight separate food carts under one roof with a full bar attached, and brings in live music from local performers on weekends. It solves the problem every group with mixed opinions on dinner eventually runs into, since nobody has to agree on one cuisine when there are eight to choose from under the same tent.

For a sit-down option, Five-O-Three keeps an open kitchen and a wine list on Willamette Drive, with a patio that typically runs live music from May through October, which means the last few weeks of that patio season line up almost exactly with the WillametteFest and Halloween window. Sushi Kuni and Izakaya covers the other end of the spectrum, flying fish in from Tokyo's Toyosu Market twice a week and running an omakase counter for anyone who wants the full chef's-choice version of that supply chain.

None of these four are new. That is the point. The corridor's daily infrastructure, coffee in the morning, food carts and a bar for a low-commitment dinner, a full sit-down option with a patio, an omakase counter for the nights that call for something more considered, has been in place for years. What changed this fall is that the calendar caught up to it. The district now has a scheduled reason to be there on a random Sunday in early October, not just the standing reasons that were already open every day of the week.

Halloween Closes It Out

Halloween in Willamette runs its usual slot on October 31, from 3 to 6 p.m., through the same business district that hosted the wine walk seven weeks earlier and WillametteFest four weeks before that. It is the one date on this list that has been a fixture long enough not to need an introduction. What is different in 2026 is everything that now happens before it. A district that used to go from a September wine walk straight into an October 31 costume walk now has a festival in between, and the six weeks that used to be the quiet stretch on Willamette Falls Drive are not quiet anymore.
